On average, a well maintained, high quality air conditioning unit should last between 10 and 15 years of regular use. But when regular TLC is no longer enough, and repairing costs start to pile up, it may be time for an upgrade.

4 Signs it’s time to upgrade your air con:

  1. Expired Warranty and Frequent Repairs

Frequent repairs are amongst the top reasons to replace an air conditioner. If your current system is no longer under warranty and continually needs professional attention, it might be time to go shopping.

  1. Loss of Efficiency

Like all other appliances, air conditioners eventually lose effectiveness. You will notice this when air flow has permanently decreased or when your air conditioner struggles to reach your desired temperature. Reasons this may occur include: The evaporator, or condenser coil, needs to be cleaned, mould or bacteria has grown due to humidity and blocked the unit, the condenser fan is broken or the unit is low on refrigerant.

In this case, ask a professional to let you know whether it’s most cost-effective to repair or replace your system.

  1. Unit is Leaking

Air conditioners, as the name suggests, condition the air by removing humidity from that environment to cool the temperature. It absorbs airborne moisture, which turns into liquid state. While part of the water cools the heating coils, most of it eventually leaks from the outdoor unit. This is why you may see a small puddle of water under the external component, and that’s not a problem.

The indoor component, however, should not leak at all. If that’s the case, consult a specialist as it may be time for a replacement.

  1. Energy Bill Rise

If your electricity provider hasn’t raised their rates and your power bill keeps increasing for no apparent reason, your existing air conditioning system may be the culprit. Units that are 10+ years old may no longer be as energy efficient as they once were. You may reduce your energy consumption and the carbon footprint of your home by investing in a new, cost-effective and environmentally friendly air conditioner.
